During the period between 1920 and 1939, thanks to the emergence of the popular international design movement which later came to be known as Art Deco, interior decoration and furniture were characterised by opulence, geometric shapes and the use of innovative and modern materials. The rich style was in stark contrast to the austerity of the years immediately following World War 1, and in the first golden age of industrial consumerism Art Deco featured in the design of automobiles, notably Bugatti , aircraft, ocean liners, and buildings, together with consumer items such as telephones… in a cohesive and consistent way.
Art Deco Style
In the spirit of prosperity consumers purchased interior decorating materials and furniture with enthusiasm. Art Deco gave them a clearly identifiable style which could be applied to many aspects of their lives both social , professional and practical. The Art Deco style spread rapidly through many other areas including architecture and industrial design. The enduring influence is still felt widely in such diverse fields as fashion, the graphic arts, and film and its influence is still easily perceived throughout the world in a diverse range of new iterations. For example the city of Long Beach California is currently being redeveloped in a post Art Deco style.
